Flanking

Flat-Footed
Flanking is a tactic that can be employed by at least two combatants against a single opponent in order to gain a tactical advantage. That advantage is expressed in terms of a reduced armor class for the opponent against all attacks by the combatants flanking it.

Requirements

  • Each of the flanking combatants must be capable of performing a melee attack on the opponent. This means they must occupy squares adjacent to the opponent, or they must be wielding melee weapons with sufficient reach to strike the opponent. Ranged weapons cannot be used to implement flanking.
  • A line drawn between the centers of the squares occupied by the flanking combatants must either pass through opposite sides of the opponent's occupied space, or through opposite corners.
Refer to the diagrams below for example of what does and does not constitute flanking positions.

Consequences

An opponent that is Flanked gains the Flat-Footed condition with respect to the flanking attackers. This condition causes the opponent to suffer a circumstance penalty of -2 to Armor Class. Note that this applies only to attacks delivered by the flanking combatants.
