Perpetual Torch
One of the most common and useful magical items that an Adventurer not gifted with the ability to see in the dark could possess is the Perpetual Torck. This looks like a simple enough item: a smooth cylinder of wood approximately 1' (30cm) long and 2" (5cm) in diameter, a wooden or metal cap snugly fitted on one end. Sliding the cap off reveals that a Continual Light spell has been cast on the end of the wooden rod - a light that will fully illuminate in all directions for a distance of approximately 20' (6m), and dimly for an additional 20' (6m) beyond that. The cap can be fitted on the opposite end when the perpetual torch is in use so as not to lose it.
Some of these also include a second sleeve of either metal or wood that slides along the shaft. With the cap removed, this sleeve can be adjusted to create a directed beam of light rather than a broad glow of illumination; this beam can be focused down to anywhere from a 180o cone to a narrow beam no more than 5' (1.5m) wide at the 20' limit of its bright illumination. (Narrowing the focus of the beam does not increase its intensity or range of illumination.)
