Surrounding

Surrounding is a tactic that can be employed by at least three combatants against a single opponent in order to gain a tactical advantage. That advantage is expressed in terms of a reduced armor class for the opponent against all attacks by the combatants surrounding it.

Requirements

  • Each of the surrounding combatants must be capable of performing a melee attack on the opponent. This means they must occupy squares adjacent to the opponent, or they must be wielding melee weapons with sufficient reach to strike the opponent. Ranged weapons cannot be used to implement surrounding.
  • A line drawn through the centers of the squares occupied by each of the surrounding combatants (thus forming a triangle or other polygon shape) must enclose the center of the opponent's occupied space.
Refer to the diagrams below for example of what does and does not constitute surrounding positions.

Consequences

An opponent that is Flanked gains the Flat-Footed condition with respect to the surrounding attackers. Note that this applies only to attacks delivered by the surrounding combatants, and not to any others that may be on the field.
