Talisman of Peaceful Repose
This magical talisman protects its wearer from the horrors of undeath in the event they meet their untimely demise. Should death occur at the hands of a creature capable of imposing that condition, or should their resting remains attempt to be reanimated in any way by magic in the future, the Talisman prevents this.
The item consists of a 1/2" (1cm) wide blue ribbon made of the finest silk affixed to a silver disk approximately 2.5" (7cm) in diameter. Several magical runes surrounding a larger "infinity" symbol are etched into the disk.
When placed on a character's head, the silk band magically resizes to provide a secure, snug, but not uncomfortable fit, with the silver disk over the forehead. As long as the character wearing it remains alive, it can be put on or removed easily (either willingly, or by force). However, at the instant of death, the magic of the Talisman triggers. From this point on, the item is securely fastened to the head of the now-deceased, and cannot be readily removed. Even after the body decays and only a skull remains, the talisman remains firmly, magically attached.
Dispel Magic cast at 5th level of magic use will allow the talisman to be removed, but it does so by removing its magical properties entirely. Burning the remains (the talisman will survive the burning), or crushing the skull to powder will also free the Talisman -- in other words, rendering the remains permanently incapable of reanimation -- a Talisman so released remains magical and can be reused.
