The Root of the Problem - Group 1 - Session 1
from the session held on September 24th, 2022
General Summary
On the morning after dinner with the Karn, Dayve awoke early and headed down to the docks to see about obtaining a nice breakfast of raw fish guts. During that dinner, the party received their rewards for solving the mystery of the strange behaviors in the eastern portion of Karnstown, and was further tasked by the Karn to try to get to the root of the problems - the mysterious "they" that Fenric Morrikarn threatened them with. As Dayve looked out over the lake, he spied one of the Karn's well-dressed bodyguards climbing into a small boat with a very downcast and disheviled looking Fenric. He watched for a few moments as the Orc bodyguard rowed out into the lake.
An hour or so later, after Dayve had harangued a few fisherfolk and gotten his tasty chum breakfast, he started heading back to the inn. As he did so, he noticed the small rowboat arriving back at the dock. The Orc tied off the boat and headed off into the city; there was no sign of Fenric.
Dayve joined the rest of his companions - all except Endrin, who did not appear for breakfast, but was not in his room - packed up their gear and headed toward the west gate out of the city. They were heading for a small mining village called Stannilode; the Karn suggested they begin their search for Fenric's co-conspirators in the hills beyond that village. Some were excited by the fact that the Karn had lifted any of the "be gentle if it's family" restrictions on them when it came to dealing with any threats out in the wild.
After two days, Dayve, Hestia, Ahronelle, Osric, and Raelin arrived in the dismal village of Stannilode. Finding the town almost deserted during the midday time - except for the folk working in the tin smeltery, they decided to check out the village tavern. Entering, they found a barkeep, serving woman, and four patrons. (The two human females turned out to be "working women" passing the time till the miners, prospectors, and smeltery workers finished work for the day; the male gnome was sitting at a gaming table shuffling a deck of cards, and the male half-orc was talking to - or ranting at - his tankard of ale.
Osric tried to make conversation with the Esther Deacon, the barkeep, and ended up hearing a long list of "strange goings-on" around the town and in the mountains beyond where the mines were found. He then decided to talk to the half-orc, who was muttering something about ghosts, and murders, and the townsfolk ridiculing him about his fears. The half-orc, who called himself Kal, recounted bits of a tale of how he and three companions had tried to get a mine - the Tancreedy mine - restarted, but were confronted by a ghost that killed the other three and sent him packing with a warning that nobody could work the mine.
Deciding they needed more information, Ahronelle and Hestia left the tavern and went to the Mining Cooperative office across the road. There, the Cooperative agent, Dado Heywood, explained the history of the Tancreedy Mine. Tancreedy was a prospector who went into the mountains with a partner. Only he returned, with evidence of the richest tin strike in the town's history. He sold the mine rights and, according to rumor, retired in luxury back in Karnstown. Since then, the Cooperative has tried to get the mine started up, but two attempts have failed. Nobody returned from the first group sent out; and only Kal returned from the second group.
Dado offered the group the sum of 250 pieces of gold if they could investigate and make the mine safe for operation.
Esther Deacon, barkeep at the Tin Cup Tavern
"Crazy Kal", a half-orc patron at the tavern
Camtart Dalipnass, a Gnome gambler at the tavern
Dado Heywood, agent for the Karnstown Mining Cooperative in town
