The Sorcerer Adventurer Profession in The World of Cartyrion | World Anvil

The Sorcerer Adventurer

You have a gift that has been passed down to you by your ancestors. More specifically by one of your ancestors that is not of "your people". Somebody in your history had an interaction with a being that is much more magically endowed than any of the other Folk of Cartyrion, and shreds of that magic endured in the family tree. One of your parents... or grandparents... may have been a Sorcerer as well, or this potential may have lay dormant until something happened to awaken it in you. Regardless of the details, this innate magical ability now defines who you are.

The Sorcerer's Bloodline

Sorcerer abilities stem from something that was introduced into your family heritage - into your bloodline - at some time in the past. The specific nature your inborn abilities will depend on just what that "something" was. Over the years, sages have classified these potential influences according to the exact nature of the magical manifestations that are present in a Sorcerer.

Some of these influences were caused by members of races that come from other planes in the Astral Space. The Astralar themselves - some of whom are responsible for the Awakenings of all the Folk of Cartyrion - may have touched your family tree. Perhaps it was a Demon or Devil from one of the hellish planes that intersect the Astral plane. It may have been one of Cartyrion's own creatures - though it would have been one that was endowed with far more magical nature than any of the typical Folk of Cartyrion. It could have been one of the Fey, or Dragons, or the Hags, or some other creature filled with magical energy. It may have been an Elemental being that found its way to Cartyrion through the channels of the Six Energies left by the Creator of Worlds. The most powerful of the Undead can also leave a mark on a family for generations to come.

Your particular bloodline will manifest itself in several ways, but mostly in the nature of the specific spells you can cast, and the potential manifestation of certain side effects that occur whenever you invoke the power that is within you.

Roleplaying the Sorcerer

Exploring the World
You will always try to seek more knowledge about the nature of the beings that are responsible for your status as a Sorcerer. You hope such knowledge will help unlock more secrets and more abilities within you. This knowledge can be helpful to your adventuring party when dealing with situations related to your bloodline source. You wlil also be sensitive to all types of magic around you, and may be able to detect traps and treasures of a magical nature that the more worldly members of your party might have missed.
Dealing with Other Folk
Regardless of your bloodline, one gift that seems universal to all Sorcerers is a strong charismatic presence. Whether you use this additional gift to charm, intimidate, deceive, or negotiate will be up to you.

How people react when they first encounter you will depend heavily on how you approach them. Using your charismatic gifts to charm may get you into higher social circles, while using intimidation will cause people to initially fear you. Regardless of initial impression, though, once your nature as a spell-weilding sorcerer becomes apparant, you will find that people may prefer to distance themselves from you - if only just a little - because you don't make sense in the world they are used to.
During Combat
You will call upon your magical gifts in all their forms to deal with foes. Many of your spells will be capable of dealing great harm. Others may affect the wills of your enemies, or even the environment around them.
Between Adventures
You will devote more time and effort to understanding your own nature. Eventually, you may learn to craft magical items or scrolls that can store and channel your innate powers, making you even more formidable a foe in future encounters.
