Painting Phased. The Ink Dweller is tethered to the painting, and thus can exist on both the painting dimension and the material plane at the same time. If a victim is pulled into a painting, the Ink Dweller takes 2 rounds per initiative order.   The Inkwell. The only known way to destroy an Ink Dweller is to use a form of blessing on the inkwell it has been cursed to. When the Ink Dweller reaches 0hp, a blessing can be performed on the inkwell and destroy the Ink Dweller. The blessing required is at the DM's discretion.

Actions

Ink Tendril (Material Plane). When on the Material Plane, the Ink Dweller can use an action to attempt to pull its victims into the painting dimension. All enemies with 10 ft. of the Ink Dweller must succeed on a DC 14 Dexterity saving throw, or be pulled into the painting dimension.   Soul Sap (Painting Dimension). Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10ft., one target. Hit: 17 (4d6+3) necrotic damage. While in the painting dimension, the Ink Dweller uses its horrifying presence to steal part of the target's soul. If a target dies, its soul is completely sapped by the Ink Dweller and immediately perishes.   Withering Touch. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6+3) necrotic damage.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Millions of stories have been told with the brush strokes of artists. Some, stories of love and passion. Others of loss and sadness. However, if you come across a painting that’s story seemingly changes into one of horror when your back is turned, you may be in the vicinity of an Ink Dweller.

The Struggling Artist. The story of the struggling artist is universal no matter which realm or plane one visits. When a poor artist has had enough of a life of poverty, some turn to the darkness to find success and make a pact with a fiendish force. The artist offers their soul in exchange for fortune and fame and upon death, their contract with the fiend is fulfilled, forcing the soul of the artist to serve the fiend for eternity.

A Cursed Inkwell. For their own morbid enjoyment, the fiend will curse the soul to inhabit the artist’s favourite inkwell, making them an Ink Dweller. When the inkwell is used by another artist, part of the dead artist’s soul is torn apart, infusing their essence into the new painting. Now becoming part of the painting. The Ink Dweller uses its power to pull other poor souls into the painting dimension, where they steal their life essence for the fiend.

A Curse Broken. The only known way to destroy an Ink Dweller is through the inkwell itself. When the Ink Dweller has been dealt a blow that would otherwise kill it, a blessing can be performed on the inkwell, finally allowing the artist’s soul to rest.
