Padded maille armor is the most common form of protection for those that can afford it. A sturdy, padded jacket (called a gambeson) is worn closest to the body and a maille shirt or hauberk made of sturdy, riveted iron rings on top. This offers fantastic protection against most forms of attack, especially slashing strikes with bladed weapons and less severe blunt strikes. However, against ranged weapons such as bows and crossbows or dedicated stabbing weapons such as rapiers, sideswords and thinner spears, the armor suffers somewhat.
Commonly worn together with a skull cap or simpler helmet for head protection.
