Cuirass: Dusty Grasping Mail

Wondrous Item

Very Rare

An intricate, imposing piece of armor, its original splendor diminished through countless years of deterioration. At its core is a robust yet fragmented amalgamation of chainmail and platemail, each segment blending seamlessly into the next, forming a unified but battered protective layer. The central torso is defined by a coarse matrix of ancient chainmail, composed of once-strong rings now dulled, corroded, and fractured. Close inspection reveals that many links are distorted, either stretched open or compressed together from impacts long past, and several areas of the mesh exhibit large voids, allowing glimpses of the frayed fabric beneath. The individual rings vary slightly in size and thickness, suggesting hand-forging through meticulous gravitational smithing, evidenced by the subtle, rippling patterns visible on the metal’s surface. Traces of corrosion cling stubbornly to these interlocking pieces, their color muted to a faded one. Overlapping the chainmail are numerous plates, sculpted from a dark, dense metal, the surface worn smooth. Each plate is carefully crafted to show elongated, gaunt hands and slender arms, interlocked and overlapping in a complex arrangement. The metal limbs embrace the wearer's torso from all directions, fingers subtly curled inward, as if perpetually grasping at the body of the wearer. Every digit, though stylized, features joints and knuckles defined with meticulous attention to detail. Many fingertips have been worn down to blunt, smooth nubs. Several plates bear significant dents and scars; shallow impressions caused by impacts that have since decayed and darkened. Across the chest area, overlying the arms and hands, a tattered black cloth drapes loosely, secured in place by tiny, corroded metal studs at irregular intervals. The cloth, woven from a dense, durable fiber, is now severely deteriorated. What remains hangs in strips and patches, each fragment frayed at the edges, bearing stubborn, deep-set stains of dirt, blood, and grime. The original hue of the cloth is indiscernible beneath layers of accumulated decay, though hints of a deep, cold black are occasionally glimpsed where the material folds inward. The lower edge of the cuirass tapers slightly outward, ending in a rugged hem where fragmented chains dangle loosely, remnants of what once might have been an extended protective skirt or faulds. Each hanging chain fragment, encrusted with grime, rust, and dried sediment, swings slightly with movement, producing a muted metallic clink as they collide.     +3 AC when worn.   Heavily Restrictive (do not include your dexterity modifier when calculating AC if any item with the Heavily Restrictive attribute is equipped)   If you have 30+ Strength initially, gain +2 Strength.     Set Bonus (Dusty Grasping Set):   1: N/A   2: Increase cold damage mitigation by 27.
