The Obsidian Dagger

Weapon

Legendary Requires Attunement

BASIC DAGGER PROPERTIES Finesse, Light, Range, Thrown.   ATTUNEMENT REQUIREMENTS Requires any good alignment and a specific goal for the dagger to support. When attuning, the dagger will connect to the wielder's soul and assess what it is that they want to accomplish most in the world. If the user's desire is clear, realizable, and deemed to be a sufficiently noble pursuit which the dagger can assist in accomplishing, the dagger will accept the attunement and fuse his purpose to the user's. If the user does not have a noble identifiable cause or the cause does not have a well-defined success metric, the dagger will rest quiet in their hands, remaining dormant until such a champion arises to draw him from his slumber.   CURSED The attuned user cannot unattune from this dagger. Once bonded, the dagger and the wielder enter into a covenant bond to see the wielder's goal through to the end. This dagger's curse is such that one aspect of the user's fate is written for the history books - they will perish in pursuit of their goals, but they will see the success of their pursuit first. The manner in which such a success comes to fruition is not certain, nor is the timeline. The dagger is known for being clever, and sometimes unpredictable in the ways its energy pulls on the weave of the universe to help its wielder along towards success. Nothing is promised except for success; this may subject the user to a fate of dismemberment, loss of loved ones, or even undeath. Fate itself twists, not the laws of physics. The user may suddenly find themselves extremely lucky, falling from a very high place but having their fall broken by conveniently present obstacles resulting in severe damage where once this fall may have proven fatal.   SENTIENT This dagger is sentient, though after such a long life seeing those he works with expire chasing their goals he has grown wearisome. In particular, after so many years of seeing attuned partners perish in pursuit of their goals he has grown sour to the idea of taking on new users. If given opportunity to, the dagger will seek chances to be unmade.   The dagger speaks whatever language the wielder speaks and understands any the wielder understands as he is psychically connected to the wielder. The wielder cannot lie to him, including in claiming their attunement goal as the dagger interprets this goal from the user's heart before making the agreement. The dagger's voice can only be heard by an attuned user, he cannot not speak audibly or even offer warnings of his own cursed nature prior to attunement.
IN PURSUIT OF SUCCESS In the pursuit of success towards the attuned user's attunement-goal:
  • Avoid death: user has advantage on all death saving throws.
  • Spiritual resilience: there is no material costs for resurrection of the user.
  • Eye on the prize: user has advantage on all attack rolls and ability checks made that directly contribute to success in the goal of their attunement.
  • Lucky: user has advantage on all saving throws in which failure would likely result in their death.
COATED IN DRAGON BLOOD This weapon has been soaked in the blood of a green dragon and now has additional properties. It deals an additional 2d4 poison damage.

APPEARANCE
This kris dagger is made out of a sleek jagged chunk of obsidian fixed to a gold and red handle. The handle of the dagger is topped by a winged lizard with ruby eyes whose wings extend to form the crossguard of the dagger.

LORE
This dagger dates back to the second age of the world, when magic flowed freely. In the age of its creation, the dagger once knew a life as the dwarf Jalon Goldengrip. When war fell across the land Jalon gave of himself unto the forge, allowing his soul to be rent from flesh and grafted to the first of the mighty dragonian blades. His was the first of many sacrifices, made in the name of devotion, to harness a new magic for warcraft. His devotion was to his love. Love's name was unrequited, but her fervor to protect her people was purer than any motive Jalon had ever known and it sparked bravery within him. His heart became a forge unto its own devices, crafting maneuvers and schemes to ensure that love's noble pursuits would be realized.

After a long and tiresome journey Jalon and his wielder led the army which slayed the fearsome green dragon, but success was not without price for Jalon and his love were matched in no quality half as well as their mutual willingness to sacrifice of themselves in the name of their shared cause. Her ambition was noble, but love was yet made of flesh while Jalon was now of hardier material. She perished in the poison emitted by the mighty beast's felled body, and for many centuries Jalon was lost in quiet repose with her decaying corpse.
