Judex

Weapon

Legendary

Martial, Spellblade (Unique), Adaptive   Spellblade (Unique): You may make one attack with this weapon as either an action or bonus action, provided you have cast an attack cantrip this turn. Additionally, Judex allows you to make this Spellblade attack after casting a spell that restores hit points to an ally, even if you did not cast an attack cantrip this turn. This attack follows all other Spellblade rules.   Adaptive: This weapon's damage type becomes the same as the last spell you cast this turn.   Feature: Balance of Judgement:   Whenever you hit a creature with an attack made using Judex, the weapon records the nature of the last qualifying spell you cast. If the most recent spell you cast restored hit points to an allied creature, you gain one Punishment stack. If the most recent spell you cast was an attack cantrip that dealt damage to a creature, you gain one Mercy stack. You can have a maximum of three stacks of either Mercy or Punishment. Whenever you gain a stack of one type, all stacks of the opposing type are immediately lost.   Mercy:   As a bonus action, you may expend any number of Mercy stacks. Choose one creature you can see within 30 feet of you. That creature regains 1d8 hit points for each Mercy stack expended. In addition, each allied creature within 5 feet of the chosen creature regains 1d4 hit points for each Mercy stack expended.   Punishment:   As a bonus action, you may expend any number of Punishment stacks. Choose one creature you can see within 30 feet of you. The target takes 1d8 dark damage for each Punishment stack expended. (Dark damage ignores all resistances and weaknesses)

"If no one else is willing to decide... then something else always will."

The square below Rithe's eastern aqueduct was unusually quiet. A magistrate stood atop the dais, reading aloud the sentence of a man accused of sabotaging the city's Sol conduits. The crowd watched in silence. Some demanded exile, while others whispered that the evidence was circumstantial.
Darrow said nothing.

"You know he didn't do it."

Graves' voice cut through the murmur of the crowd. Calm and certain; typical of the man.

"I know I can't prove he didn't."

"You don't need to prove innocence to know that this isn't right."

Darrow folded his arms. "If I speak now, and I'm wrong, an innocent dies because of me."

"And if you don't?"

The magistrate raised the executioner's seal.

Darrow looked away.

"...Someone else decides."

The sentence was carried out before sunset.

That night, neither of them spoke much.

As they watched the lights of the Sol Reactor shimmer across the water, Darrow finally broke the silence.

"I was trying to do the right thing."

Darrow's better half rested a hand against his own.

"I know."

"...How do you know when you're right?"

"You don't."

The answer lingered between them longer than either expected, before Graves spoke again.

"You weigh what you know. You accept what you don't. Then you choose."

"And if I choose wrong?"

He smiled sadly.

"Then you'll carry it."

A long silence followed.

"Darrow..."

"...Yeah?"

"The world isn't waiting for our every decision, it'll move forward regardless of what we do. So every moment you refuse to judge something..."

He watched another lantern drift over the eerily smooth bay.

"...it's still a judgment."
