The false visage of the ruler of Myrria; designed to protect its bearer as well as be a symbol of gods-given power.

The blade had come from above.

No warning or declaration; just the hiss of steel slipping through rain as it fell toward the back of Lady Lothello's neck.

The court that had gathered there gasped in shock, but the blade itself found only mist. Where the queen had stood, silver vapour unfurled without haste, and the assassin's outstretched arm drifted through it as though his target had been no more substantial than the rain around him.

Stumbling forward, the man glanced around at the crowd, trying to make sense of his mark that dissappeared before him.

By the time the mist had dispersed, the sound of splintering stone echoed through the hall. Lothello now stood with one polished boot resting upon the assassin's throat, his body crumpled against the fractured marble beneath him. He clawed weakly at her leg, searching for any manner of leverage around him that did not exist.

The queensguard around the scene remained frozen; they had not been fast enough to intervene, nor were they needed. Lothello grasped the ornamental mask on her face, still shining with etched magic, revealing her near-perfect complexion underneath. The assassin's eyes widened as he met hers, searching for fury, satisfaction, recognition, anything.

He found none.

"Curious." Her voice echoes effortlessly though the silent chamber.

"I don't recall inviting you."

Her weight shifted. The man's struggle ended with a single, muffled crack. The queen stepped over the body without another glance, smoothing an errant crease from one glove as she continued towards the throne.

"Have someone clean this," she says before taking a brief pause, "and replace the stone."

She looked not at the corpse on the floor, only at the section that had shattered.

"I prefer it unbroken."
