Making ink for writing is a very expensive process and the materials involved are the main reason for the cost. Ink is made by mixing iron salts with tannic acids made from rare plants. It also requires an alcohol to carry the pigment to the paper. The alcohol will then evaporate, leaving the pigment on the paper or vellum.
