Physical Description

This large rhinoceros has a shaggy pelt of long fur and a row of immense horns on its snout and brow. The fur may come in almost as many different shades of brown as do the bark colors of different trees, ranging from a dark walnut through golden maple to the light golden ruddy texture of ponderosa pines. Some individual woolly rhinos might even have a spotted pattern different colors similar to the tobiano pattern in horses.

Description

The woolly rhinoceros is an herbivore, though unlike its non-woolly cousin it grazes for food rather than browsing on larger plants. The woolly rhino is legendary for its foul temper, and its size and huge horn give it a ferocious bravery. Any threat (real or perceived) to the rhino or its herd is met with loud bellows and the stomping of feet. Often, those who unwittingly anger a woolly rhino have no time to amend the intrusion before the beast attacks.

Oral tradition in some cultures suggests that woolly rhinoceros used to gather in herds of up to thirty members, somewhat like bison or unicorns. This may be true; or the stories of the species may be mixed together.

Most cultures in current times have never seen anything rhinoceros-like at all, since they are now a rare species that keep to high plateaus. Any story about a shaggy horned creature with the girth of a bison is probably about a moose or elk which has dropped or broken one of its antlers. Of course, anyone encountering a megafauna should probably skip out on species identification. Instead, be somewhere else swiftly!
