Shorter hand axes, called bearded axes, that are around 4 to 6 palms long are not very common on the battlefield, but they are relatively effective at unarmored or lightly armored opponents as they offer good power and penetration and the bearded part of the blade can be used to dislodge or displace shields. They aren't quite as nimble as swords, but do offer significantly more punch. Axes are relatively affordable.
