Getting this right is *really* tricky, especially since someone might have more than two parents, each of which might have several partners, concurrently or not. Some people are related to each other, which results in additional snags. I'd LOVE to see this solved, but it's difficult to do even before you code.
I would find this very useful. Especially for families where their are children through multiple marriages.
This would help keep track of family connections so much easier, and make creating the family tree simpler.
To be able to learn of atleast how many people were recorded in a family would be neat or to atleast establish some lore as to how complicated a family tree can be.
Also, change the formatting so character inclusion is chronological, rather than alphabetical, and attached to the correct parental units (ie, if there are multiple spouses or affairs, the children of these should be places between the applicable parents, rather than mixed in with the other offspring).
Yes please. I have multiple family trees where the relationship between cousins or an aunt/uncle and their nibling are more important in my story than direct blood relations, but no one can tell because they don't know they need to click to view further relations, and wouldn't think to do so because it doesn't look like the relation even exists unless I spell it out somewhere else in writing.
The user Didz that created this request did an excellent job with a work around to achieve his goal which may be seen in this article here. This give a point of reference for what is desired. And as several have said if this can not be handled by the system then the option to construct and export this as an image would also be fantastic. I think some version of this often requested feature should be considered, which does not require the user to leave the World Anvil workflow.
Probably not as an interactive version, due to the computation needed - but it would be cool to click a button and have a static image generated that can be downloaded.
Maybe showing the cousins (or chosing to show or hide them) could be a nice add to the family tree feature.
The family tree does need an update; I've come across a few depictions of my own characters' bloodlines that are wrong or misleading because of the way it's set up. If it would make it easier on the system, I would be fine without any of the portraits on the full tree, or having it be a generated image.
Yes, this keeps getting requested and keeps getting turned down. But voting down for this reason, even if it's something you'd otherwise agree with seems counter intuitive. It provides an inaccurate picture of how much support a feature would have.
I have such an issue with conceptualizing charts like this spatially, this would be a lot of help. I think there's also further functionality with a feature like this that might allow things like origins of species and whatnot.
I approve of this idea. It would be useful for other reasons as well. In my case, I am writing a family drama focusing on Great Houses. The Houses are interconnected through marriage and offspring in complex ways. It would be useful for my audience to be able to follow the plot more effectively if they could see all of that laid out in one single place. I can understand this not being the standard, but perhaps a box you can check if you want it on a particular article? And I don't just mean the organization articles; like when you embed the family tree on a character article, this would also be extremely useful. Thanks!
This would be so immensely helpful. I don't use the family tree feature because of the limitations it currently has, but if this were to be put through I would definitely use it. Cheers!
There is definitely value in this. But not sure it can be done at our current level of technology.
Even if it just has a name with a picture that is not linked to an article.
To help not stress the system, what about the option to generate an image instead of an interactive tree? You can select the start person, then specify how many generations to go down. The image can then be displayed in any article. It would be up to the user to intiate a new image generation when new people are added to the tree.
They've said before it would be too much on the system
You can display a bloodline (just direct relations). Wouldn't a full family tree would be too heavy for the system?
it already shows from a singular point, but not being able to see a whole family tree is frustrating sometimes. I'm not sure how easy it would be to display the whole tree everything would be either very cramped or very wide.
Already exists! Just click on the family member you wanna see the relations of. For wive/mistresses, there is an arrow on the sides of the image to scroll between each person. Any children associated with that wife and/or mistress will also display too. adopted children will have a 'blood drop with a line across it' to depict that they are not blood related, clicking on the that child will show both his/her's biological and adopted parents as well as any biological or step siblings.
I think this would be an excellent feature, particularly if you could connect multiple family lines together to show the heritage of future generations, if you're planning a series that involves a long timeline
