Navigation Linear Linear-Navigation Previous-Article Next-Article
I hope I'm not missing something, but I could only find a few older suggestions regarding this topic (e.g. here and here).

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

I heavily use linear navigation (Previous/Next-Article configuration) to make it easier to navigate between related articles, for example linking session reports, countries within a continent or Organizations of the same type; mainly to make it easier to "click through" without having to constantly navigate back to the parent category (if the two articles even have the same parent).   Currently you have to manually set the Previous and Next Articles for every single one, so:   Article A - Previous: Article C; Next: Article B
Article B - Previous: Article A; Next: Article C
Article C - Previous: Article B; Next: Article A
Essentially, the "chain" that results is A > B > C > A > B > ...   By linking every article individually, we could also do A > B > C > B > C > B > ..., by setting "C" as B's Previous and Next Article. I personally want my linear navigation to end in loops most of the time, but I could see why someone would want to have this freedom.   However, I would love it if setting Article B as the "Next Article" for Article A automatically put Article A as B's "Previous" or vice versa (If you set A as B's "Previous" it would automatically put B as A's "Next") Since you can also delete these entrys, it would still be possible to manually change these links if one didn't want the consistent linear progression.   This request is absolutely a nice-to-have thing and nothing absolutely necessary for using WA, but I think it would be very neat either way.

The Team's Response

Thanks for the suggestion! We definitely see how this could be useful, but it doesn't seem to have enough support from the community to justify development and design time on this.

As the author of one of the older suggestions you found I have to cast some votes in favour of this one to show I would still like it. My suggestion was declined on the grounds of the potential impact on performance and relative lack of support but it was three years ago and maybe there is more support this time and maybe there are newer tech options for the performance question? And maybe not. But have some votes to represent my continued interest in the principle even if it gets declined again for practical reasons (which I do understand). Like Those2Nerds, I suggested it should be switched on by an optional check box at category or parent article level.

I would not want this to happen automatically. However, I would support an opt-in method, such as a checkbox when setting linear nav that, if checked, would also update the linear nav on the target article.
