Bear, Black Species in The World of Cartyrion | World Anvil

Bear, Black

The Black Bear is the most common species of bear on Cartyrion; it can be found in virtually every forested region in the world except for the frozen wastes of the polar regions. In many places it shares habitat with its other ursine cousins.

Black bears are typically covered with very dark brown fur; despite their name, relatively few specimens have truly black fur. From a distance, the fur appears to be fine and silky, but this is due to a thin oily film that covers the hairs to provide the bear with both insulation and a degree of waterproofing.

Black bears are omnivorous. They will use their claws to tear up rotting remains of felled trees to get at insect grubs, or will dig tuberous roots from various plants. If necessary, they will hunt smaller animals and larger insects. Scavenging relatively freshly deceased carcasses is also not uncommon.

Fish is a significant part of their diet. They are often encountered in shallow stretches of rivers and streams, using their forepaws to snare fish. They are, however, excellent swimmers capable of traversing even deep, swift-moving rivers. The creatures appear to have a sweet tooth; fruits and berries are highly prized foods, as is the honey found in beehives.

The creatures are capable of climbing trees. Their long claws offer excellent purchase on tree trunks, but they are not particularly agile climbers.

Black bears are more territorial, and see almost anything out of the ordinary - such as a wandering Adventurer - as a threat. Mothers of cubs are particularly aggressive.
