Goblins... and Puppies!

When the Goblinar arrived at Cartyrion, they found a world already populated by Alevar, Orokar, and Duagnar deities. Seeking, as they always do, to prove themselves equal in abilities to their astral "cousins", and therefore worthy of respect, they Awakened the Goblin People.

The Goblinar deities of creation saw that each of the other Astralar races before them created not just a People, but also other living things for their people to utilize. Their Goblin children did not need new creatures for food - the small furry creatures provided by the Elven gods were plentiful enough. Boars and bears were more than enough challenge for hunters and warriors to prove their bravery. What the Goblins needed was a creature that was versatile enough, and intelligent enough, to serve as a companion and assistant in their efforts to prove their value to the other Peoples of Cartyrion.

To meet these needs, the Goblinar created the Wolves. These were intelligent creatures, gentle enough when properly treated to be domestic companions, yet sturdy and fierce enough to be used as mounts by Goblin Warriors that could do as much damage to opponents as their riders. Over the centuries, other varieties would come to be recognized. "Brawnies", as the Goblins referred to them, that escaped or were lost in the wild grew leaner (and meaner), giving rise to packs of Gaunt Wolves. Orcs, impressed by the performance of the creatures as mounts, learned to breed larger, more formidable variants until the creatures rivaled the sizes of the horses ridden by humans. These were the Orcwolves. Humans themselves took breeding in a different direction. Over the centuries have bred and crossbred creatures to form the many varieties of Dog that serve as companions for city folk, status symbols for the rich, workmates for shepherds and farmers, and guardians of everything from trade goods to young children.
