Velhala Taylor

Colt and Velhalla sat at a bar in a mostly deserted tavern late into the night. In fact, hints of a rising sun could be seen in the window. The two friends were a little beat up but relatively okay. They arrived shortly after midnight, had a meal and many drinks, and danced until the band packed up and left. Right now, they were having a very late-night snack with drinks. The bartender and cook had sat down at the far end of the bar and dozed off within minutes. The Aasimar Swashbuckler and the Teifling Wild Magic Sorrocer were picking through their food, giving the other things they did not like, and sometimes pulling things out of the other's plate they knew would not be eaten.
"Pre-dawn meals are the best," Velhalla said, chewing on some meat.
"Wouldn't that make it breakfast?" Colt said, popping some crackers into his mouth. "No," Vel said confidently. "Pre-dawn meal." "What's the difference?" "No syrup," She said, smirking at him. "That's your rubric between breakfast and pre-dawn meals? The availability of syrup?" Colt said, chuckling. "Yes," she said, laughing with him. "Yes, I do. That's my.... ruby-ic."
The two continued to eat and hum before Vel, looked at the sleeping bartender. "I really want to turn him into a chicken." "Why?" Colt said, looking over. "He's nice." "He keeps calling me Vel Velhalla," she sighed. "It's like he's yelling my name because he didn't hear me the first time. It's annoying." "Well, you didn't give him your last name. You just said your name twice. This area is a bit more formal and uses people's full names when addressing them. You could have just given them your last name," Colt said, patting her shoulder. "I don't like my last name. It isn't my last name," She said with a soft growl.
"Then pick a new one," Colt said casually. "And give it out when you have to," he said, shrugging. ..

Velhalla nodded and stopped eating, thinking for several moments. "Velhalla.... Taylor." Colt paused and looked over, "Velhalla Taylor? You'd use my last name?" She nodded, looking at him. There was a slight drop in her heart that perhaps that was something she should not have done, "Is that okay? Do you think people will think we are married?" "No," Colt said with a warm smile that quickly softened any concern she had. "People will quickly see you have higher standards," he said with a smirk. "Besides, when they see us together, they will see more of a sisterly and brotherly relationship between us."
"You are," she said softly.
"I am, what?" Colt said, turning himself to her on the stool to give her his full attention. "My brother," she said with a hint of a tear in her eye. Colt gently put his hand on the back of her head, and the two friends pressed their foreheads together, "Velhalla. You are my friend. My best friend. And you will always be my sister. Until the end," The last sentence, which he did not throw around too much, hit her hard with warmth. "And you will always be my brother." She could see some tears in his eyes. They both tightly embraced and then leaned back, letting out a sigh. "We are tired," Colt said, rubbing his eyes. "And drunk," Vel mentioned with a smile. They clinked their mugs to toast each other. Colt smiled, "I'm still just going to call you Vel." "Yeah, I won't tell anyone. You do have a... reputation." "That I do....sister." He smiled, and the two continued, only moving to watch the sunrise before sleeping for the better part of the day.
