The Endmere Coliseum

The entertainment center for the Free City of Endmere is a landmark that the city's residents are proud of. It was so important to the people that it was the first major municipal structure to be restored after the Great Strife, even before the City's Hall of Ministers. The current structure is as close to an identical replica of the original, pre-Strife structure as the city builders could manage.

The people of Endmere, rich and poor, gather here each week to cheer on their favorite gladiators. Once a month, public executions are added to the entertainment agenda during the games. The arena is also the central focus of a three-week long festival every three years, when it is home to the Free City Games. This spectacle, which originally pitted individuals and teams from the four Free Cities against one another in friendly sport now attracts competitors from the Kingdoms and other far-off lands as well.

Purpose / Function

The Coliseum hosts wide variety of events over the course of a year, ranging from the weekly Gladiatorial Combats to the monthly public executions to the Free City Games.

Alterations

The original Coliseum, erected in 12935HR was razed to the ground when the city was sacked during the Great Strife. When the city was rebuilt, the Coliseum was restored to its original size, shape, and design, and reopened in 76CR.

Architecture

The Coliseum was built in the imposing style that was commonly in use in the First Kingdom at the time. Large stone blocks of smooth, flawless white limestone were moved with magic as well as muscle to form the outer shell's distinctive design of arches over arches. The stepped floors and seating benches of the spectator areas were also of white limestone. The oval competition floor of the Coliseum consisted of a wooden platform covered with several inches of dirt. In a few spots, sections of the platform could be lowered into a staging area below the main arena and then raised into place. Other temporary structures were commonly erected on the arena floor depending on the nature of the event being staged.

History

The original Coliseum was erected in the year 12935HR. It was utterly destroyed during the latter part of the Great Strife when the entire city was overrun. When the city was rebuilt, the Coliseum was restored to its original size, shape, and design, and reopened in 76CR.
