What I'm Reading! Issue 261

Hey, Everybody! Here we go with Issue 261!

 

How's WorldEmber been? It's almost over. Jan 3rd is so very close. Well, no matter what your goals were-word count badge, special categories, expand your setting, etc-I hope you nailed them. But, if not, there's still time to squeeze a little more out! From what I understand, after this comes the Reading Challenge! Great challenge really. It's a time to kick back, rest and reflect. Recharge through reading other people's worlds and worldbuilding. Along with that comes the Best of World Anvil! That's a big one. I've had people say around me 'oh, I could never'... but really... why not? You never know. It's a chance to put out your best. You might be surprised!

 

But, while I've been chasing a badge or two, I've also tried to catch up on my reading. So, without further delay!

How is your Worldember so far?

Hello friends!! I hope you’re all well, hydrated, and inspired! This post is simply my way of saying how much I adore this time of year. WorldEmber motivates me and fills me with the urge to create. Since we’re already almost two weeks in (give or take), I wanted to share some incredible articles I’ve read and shine a little spotlight on some wonderful creators and their worlds! I originally hoped to write one of my Fireflies Under Starlight articles, but I don't think I have the time for that. Still, this post is the least I can do! So, with all my love, here are five articles I absolutely enjoyed reading <3   1. Brightgill by Nulcheck   2. Weird Moon Singing by Demongrey   3. Ulűri̋qi̋an Current Calendar by Blue Fairy   4. WorldEmber is almost here!

Red Dragons Tong

I've been busily adding my cyberpunk noir science fiction world here on WA. The Red Dragons are the largest criminal syndicate on Chendiuria. Aditi "Adi" Nizhóní Peshlakai , my former Colonial Fleet Marine Myrmidon MC, has delt with the Red Dragons in the past.

I'm looking forward to WorldEmber 2025 and plan to focus on geography. I've got quite a list of articles I want to write.

I'm doing really well with NovelEmber. I am currently at 31,742 words, and I am contemplating perhaps increasing the challenge to 100k words if I can figure out how to do that on PWA.

For the foreseeable future, I am posting a chapter each Sunday. I am alternating between two stories set in my Augmented Valor world. One story features Adi and Shadows of Eros; the other story takes place about 70 years before Adi's time.

I didn't write anything for Spooktober. I am participating in NovNov, even though I have no intent at the moment to publish a book. My writing is not exactly setting the world on fire, but writing keeps me entertained. I started writing again, after a nearly 20 year break, at the suggestion of my VA therapist for post-service PTSD therapy.

Working on getting my world built on World Anvil. I've imagined this world for more than 30 years, long before I even knew what cyberpunk was.

I'm moving to World Anvil from Fictionary as the world building options here are significantly better, and it's a little cheaper each month.

My super augmented former Colonial Fleet Marine, Adi, and her story are still a work in progress.

As always, I want to give my continuous thanks for everyone that had read, started reading, currently reading, or bringing others on to read.

I’m proud of you all making it this far in the week; I believe that deserves acknowledging! As such, I have a bunch of for you all!!

Chapter 7 is very background heavy with a L O T of details and Easter eggs. I don’t have a definitive release date, but expect the next chapter sometime in September 2025.

My first Summer Camp Journey!

I had promised myself to go for gold. Somehow I managed to write 32 articles earning that shinny diamond badge in the end!
  Summer Camp was so much more than I expected: exhausting, uplifting, and absolutely unforgettable. Full of madness and magic! I talked and got to know better some amazing people, met some new, awakened the badge goblin inside me, and poured my heart into every word.

Hello everyone!
This is my second year in this lovely, amazing community but first ever post - so it's only fitting that it's all about Summer Camp. When we all began this month of creativity I'd been stuck in a writer's block for ages and nothing felt fun anymore. My novel was stuck. My words never came out right. It's been a little bleak, but the support I found with you all gave me the energy to take my notebook into the forest and start to write. Why was I stuck? What questions remained that I wasn't sure of? What other corners could I flee to when the main setting felt too overwhelming? Enter Summer Camp!

A copper badge has become a silver one and while I hope I can keep going towards gold, I also have a film to shoot all week heh. This is my progress so far and I hope they're worth something, they sure are to me. Especially the Nyrrah. I'd love to meet one in real life.

Summer Camp Update!

Hello worldbuilders!


  Summer Camp has been an absolute blast so far; in one word: AMAZING!
  I've been using this creative chaos as the perfect excuse to dive deeper into my dark fantasy, post-apocalyptic world: Crux Umbra. If you've mostly been following me for Kena'an, you might’ve noticed fewer updates there lately, but don't worry, it’s not forgotten! I’m just wandering through ash-covered ruins for a bit.
  So far, I’ve written 9 articles, which means I’ve hit the first milestone and earned that shiny Copper badge! My official goal is Gold, but between us... I'm quietly chasing that sweet, sweet Diamond!

Day 3 of Summer Camp: A dish served in every household.

SO! This was a tough one, as a foodie that is. I love food, I love food so much I cook it whenever I am not eating fast food and I am a picky taster. I have to spice and it I have to make sure everything is perfect.

So what the heck is Weissknochla? It's actually inspired by a dish I grew up on that my mother used to make, that she learned from her mother and so on. It's a traditional dish that I took have made numerous times, but I, of course, have overcomplicated the heck out of.

So I decided to make it last night, but dumbed down and simplified to fit in my world of Belle Epoque wonderment and I would hope that I did so with this.

I don't want to share the actual name because I am sure many people will claim I just copied the recipe off some online site instead of making my own - I know how you are, internet!

But this is a nice, warm stew. Thick, creamy, chickeny...

The Lucian Faith within my world of Ezre is one of my FAVORITE things I haven't written about yet - mainly because of how weird religion works in my world.

So, the thing is, there are no gods - but there are these animistic spirits called DIUM, check them out here - Dium who exist and are the manifestation of all the natural processes of the world and thus, magic is just the mortal manipulation of these processes by making deals with the spirits. So! How does faith work with that?

Well, they are teachers - scholars and such - who help ensure that the big spirit from another plane of existence doesn't scam you out of anything important, like your life or free will of that 20$ that gram-gram gave you for christmas. All the important things in life.

That's important, too! Not just maps, or what world, but the 'how'. Will you take it at an even pace? Or savagely attack each prompt, sparing none of them? Somewhere in between works , too! At least for me, pacing for Summer Camp means a lot. For me? I tend to go "Chill". Take my time. Quality over quantity as the saying goes. But it's an important personal choice!

What I'm Reading! Issue 228

Hey, Everybody! Here we go with Issue 228!

How is March treating you? Good? I hope you're making progress on your projects! Oh, tried out any unofficial challenges? Which one? As for me, I'm just moving forward on my own projects, but I'm keeping an eye on any challenges coming in April and on. Besides, Summer Camp is on the horizon!

This time I found myself reading a lot o Natural Law worldbuilding. That's fun stuff. The backbone of settings, how they connect and interact. Could be laws of magic, where superpowers originated from, but it could be something deeper that connects cultures. I think that's why I like reading them, you never know what you'll find!

So, another new experience begins for me, as this is my first WAWA. Every World Anvil challenge so far has left me feeling excited and grateful to be part of it. But to be honest, the Worldbuilding Awards initially felt daunting. It’s one thing to showcase your work and another to pledge it in a competition seeking the best of the best. I don’t know if this is impostor syndrome or simply self-doubt, but here we are.   Yet, since joining this beautiful community and witnessing all the good it has done for my mind and soul, I made a promise to myself- to embrace opportunities and let go of fear. With that in mind, I entered the awards with a light heart and a single thought:  

This is not about the competition

  I see WAWA as a celebration of our shared passion. Worldbuilding and storytelling are what keep the child in me alive, and I know the same is true for many other Anvilites. So, I entered for that child- to make it proud, to teach it courage, and to show it the value of what it creates.   I’ve put together this overview article of everything I submitted for WAWA 2025. Make sure to check the Author’s Notes, where I’ve listed every overview I found from fellow Anvilites. Don’t forget to visit their articles as well and share some love! And if you have an overview of your own I have not yet discovered, please share it in the comments so I can add it!

Y'all know how much I love sharing secrets in the community feed. This post is no different.

DW and I met when he became a part of the weird little collective of creative radicals I've been assembling in the quiet cracks in the creative community where the worldbuilders collect. Two tiny fledglings struggling to swim, and doing better at it with the support and encouragement of each other.

And never once has it mattered that he's a swan, and I'm a goose. honk!

Y'all, there would not be a Worldbuilding Wednesday or a weekly Ask the Bard if it weren't for DW coming in, every Blue Anvil week and dropping a question or two into the queue for me to answer. If you read my "Ask the Bard" columns, and it feels like I'm sharing an inside joke with the community that you don't quite get...it's because it's directly related to a conversation DW and I have had!

The Best Kind of Bean

All of this is how I know that once DW sees what this community is and what we're about, he'll not only fit himself into it, he will -- like me -- begin digging himself into the bedrock of this place, another solid pillar of friendly support, feedback, and very interestingly shaped pointy sticks that he will use to drive us all into the unexplored reaches of our own creativity and worldbuilding experience!

How's WorldEmber going? Make your goals? Still chugging away? It's getting down to the last few days. Remember to take breaks and pace yourself. But, hey, I understand because once you get going with WorldEmber, it's hard to stop, isn't it? I'll keep this one quick as we all have our WorldEmber worldbuilding to tackle. This time, I've got a good sample of vehicles, festivals, and titles! Titles, I think are particularly tough. After all, a title exists for a reason in an organization. Often it comes with its own history and subtle meaning.

Can you believe we’re already halfway through December? They say time flies when you’re having fun, but what’s happening this month is truly shocking! Like many of you, WorldEmber has become my favorite challenge of the year- and for so many good reasons. The inspiration I gain from it is incredible, and I love the opportunity to explore such amazing lore from worlds that are so unique! It really is a blessing to be part of this community.

Worldember flows so good! I feel blessed to be a part of this and the choice to join World Anvil six months ago was frankly one of the best decisions I made this year! Worldember is a blast!

I knew I was excited for this. I knew all of you were thrilled for WE to begin. What I didn’t know was how all these feelings would multiply once WE actually started! THIS IS SO MUCH FUN! My motivation to write is through the roof, and the incredible entries I read every day are a source of inspiration unlike any other. You are all fantastic creators, and from the bottom of my heart, I wish you the best!   May you achieve all your goals, and may we always have opportunities to celebrate creativity the way we do here in this wonderful community that never ceases to amaze me!   This is my first WE, and I have to say- it’s going pretty well! November was a busy month!

Hello beautiful nerds! I hope this was a productive and happy month for all of you. For me, November passed on a flash since I got many things happening at once. My seasonal work was over and I found myself having plenty of free time. I had some rest which I needed, saw my friends who I had missed and played some games which is always a treat! As for worldbuilding, it was a month of preparation! I wasn;t engaged with Novelember (maybe next year), but I had a blast participating in four amazing Unofficial Challenges: Splash Challenge by Mochi, Mapvember 2024 by Tillerz, Fires of Creation and Longest Journey Chapter 3 by Tyrdal.  

Worldember Preparation

The rest of my time went into preparing for Worldember. This will be my first time joining this challenge and the hype is real! I was eager for it anyway, but the excitement about it from everyone is infectious! I finished my homework and have a clear image in my head of what I want to write about. I will focus on regions and geographic locations so I did some warm up by revistiting some of my old articles that needed some refinment. Welcome to November, and it'll be a busy one! Unofficial challenges, and then there is Novelember and WorldEmber prep. Which one are you going to tackle? Or is it "all the things"? (Looking at you Camp Feral from Summer Camp. I know all of you are lurking about out there!) No matter which it is, I believe I've got a good mix to help inspire you no matter which challenge you take on!

 
But also! Whichever one you take on, just pace yourself. There's more time than you might think. Both are so worthy and a large challenge to tackle! I'm looking forward to seeing who goes after what! Because it's Novelember, I added a little at the bottom of this list. Might want to check it out!

Hello beautiful people! I hope November finds you healthy, happy and inspired! Novelember has arrived and Worldember is just around the corner. It sounds like a lot, but since you are here it means worldbuilding is a passion of yours that always eagers for more! And that, my friends, is a feeling that deserves to be celebrated, don't you think?

What's this about?

As the holiday season approaches, me and my very cool anvilite friend CoolG, can't help but wonder what grand celebrations bring joy to the people in your worlds. Whether it's a magical feast, an epic festival, or a once-in-a-lifetime cosmic event, we want to know how your worlds come alive through their unique holidays and traditions. Let’s see how food, song, and cheer shape the cultures and histories of your creations!

Challenge accepted/Challenge completed! Spooktober wrap up and more <3

So, Spooktober's finale is just around the corner and I am very proud to say: I made it! All 21 prompts are now available and published and the adventure through the haunted "Twilight Macabre" awaits everyone who dares enter. The endeavor of building a text adventure was a true marathon; one that was super satisfying! What shocked me was I haven't even realized before today that I published the last article, that I have written more than 35,000 words in total for this adventure! I haven't written that much in a while and I have missed it a lot. If you have no clue what I'm talking about, all you need to do is visit my Spooktober hub in the bottom of this post and follow the instructions. I will be thrilled to see what you think of it if you do!  
For those who have already embarked on the journey of the Twilight Macabre: Thank you! I really appreciate the support and your feedback
 

What else is coming?

 

1. I have already started working on Noel's Unofficial challenge on Family History. You can find the link to the challenge on the bottom of this post as well. Make sure to enter this. The theme is awesome and the rewards will blow your mind! Submission period is open until October 31, so hurry!

2. Also, don't forget to check Tyrdal's challenge of the Longest Journey. I think Chapter 2 (link on the bottom of the post again) will run for two more weeks. But this is not all from Tyrdal. I'm very curious to see what the challenge called "Flashfire" will be about!

3. I'm not sure if I will participate in Noverlember since Spooktober drained me a bit, but I will sure try to publish some short stories for my new world, called "Chronicles of blood". We shall see where this will lead me :D

4. Last but not least, I urge you to stay tuned because sometime around the end of the month something Grand and Spectacular is coming. A new unofficial challenge will be released; a collaborative work of me and the amazing CoolG. I think you' ll love this one <3

Spooktober overview and more...

Hello anvilites! I hope you' re all having a fantastic and productive month! Since there are just 8 days remaining for the end of Spooktober challenge, I thought to make a small recap. So, as you might know on top of this months challenge, I also challenged myself to use all the prompts to create a text adventure. In this scenario, you get to be one of the visitors of the haunted circus called "Twilight Macabre". You can curve your own path and make your own choice as you travel this mysterious carnival but your goal is one: to reach the exit before dawn! It is spooky and very fun to write. So far 14 promts (and some bonus articles you might or might not read depending on your choices) have been published, but I aim to conclude this adventure before the 28th of October. Also, I would like to take the opportunity and thank all the wonderful people on discord for all their help, feedback and support. This community is amazing and its people super helpful all the time!
  Finally, there are great things coming really soon! First of all, since I came here, my world expands like never before. I can't express how invaluable this is for me as I come from a writer's block that had lasted at least 4 years. I'm very proud of where this is going!   And then there is my honest belief on the importance of #SharetheLove. My article below, in which I shout out to some of the articles that caught my eye, was very well received and I loved doing it, so I'm considering of making it a monthly thing, so make sure to check it out.   And last but not least, I would advice you to stay tuned, because very soon (around the end of the month) a great little thingy is coming your way. This is a collaboration with a very talented and productive anvilite, whose work I admire for a while now!   CoolG you rock!
